5 Iceland ITINERARIES

Information Concerning all Rides in Iceland

  • Small but mighty! The Icelandic horse is a symbol of national pride and cultural heritage. They are known for their surefootedness and gentle nature, and they are famous for the Tölt, a gait unique to the breed, which makes them incredibly comfortable over great distances and rugged terrain. Riding an Icelandic horse in its homeland is an authentic experience you won’t forget. These horses are not only strong but also friendly and affectionate- they love a good cuddle!

On this tour, we’ll also be herding alongside free-running horses, a traditional way of traveling in Iceland. With a fast pace, you’ll switch horses at least once or twice a day!

    Max rider weight: 110kg / 240 lbs

Did you know? Icelandic horses are the only horse breed in Iceland, kept pure for over a thousand years. No horses are ever imported, which means every Icelandic horse you meet carries a unique heritage found nowhere else in the world.

Important: All riding gear should be disinfected before traveling to Iceland, as horses here are not vaccinated. We will provide additional information about disinfecting gear at the time of booking.

  • Individual travel insurance is not included in the tour price. We encourage all guests to contact their travel insurance before visiting Iceland.

Check out our blog for tips on choosing the right insurance for your riding holiday.

  • Fly to: Keflavík Airport (KEF) - Reykjavik International Airport

    Airport Transfer

We recommend booking your transfer between Keflavík Airport and Reykjavík with Reykjavik Excursions’ Flybus service. It is reliable, comfortable, and runs both ways, waiting for passengers after each flight arrival. The bus departs from just outside the airport terminal and takes about 45 minutes to reach the BSI Bus Terminal in central Reykjavík. This is where most rides begin, and it is where you will be picked up to start your adventure!

Departure Times: The Flybus departs approximately 35-40 minutes after each flight arrival.

Booking: You can book your Airport Direct Ticket to and from Reykjavík

Buses are located just outside the airport terminal building.

    Liability:
Our ride operator reserves the right to alter routes, itineraries or timetables without prior notice, should the necessity arise and depending on road or weather conditions.

  • Make sure to bring comfortable riding clothes and shoes! We recommend high riding boots with a heel, but low boots are also acceptable. Make sure to bring a couple pairs of comfortable shoes, such as hiking or rubber boots, in case they get wet. Bring plenty of layers and wool clothing. We will provide a detailed packing list before the trip.

Cleaning and Disinfecting Riding Gear: All riding gear (trousers, jackets, etc.) must be washed at 40°C or dry cleaned before arriving in Iceland. For items that can’t be washed (boots, helmets), clean and disinfect them at least five days before your trip. We recommend using Virkon S for disinfecting.
Please note that used riding gloves, whips, saddles, bridles, chaps, or other leather items are not allowed to be brought into Iceland.
Note: Iceland has no contagious animal diseases, and the horses are not vaccinated. To protect their health, we ask for your help in following these guidelines. For more information, visit www.mast.is.

HEKLA VOLCANO EXPEDITION

A journey across the dramatic landscapes at the foot of one of Iceland’s most feared volcanoes

  • 5 nights / 6 days / 5 days riding

  • €2890 per person

  • Intermediate to experienced riders

Hekla, one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland, was once considered by Icelanders to be the 'Gateway to Hell' due to regular and powerful eruptions. Despite this fearsome reputation, the lava and ash from these eruptions enriched the soil, which with time created rich pastures around the volcano. The ash and light pumice lava stone have formed incredibly smooth paths ideal for riding adventures in the land of fire and ice. On this exciting 5 day tour, you traverse trails through lava fields and lush lands and travel with a herd of horses - always with Hekla in sight! Riders on this tour will have the opportunity to get great insight into the history of the area through local activities in the afternoons as well as the option to try different horses each day and stay at a beautifully renovated farmhouse.

This ride is reserved for intermediate-advanced riders (family friendly, open to experienced children 11+)

  • Day 1: We will pick you up at the BSI Bus Terminal in Reykjavik around noon and drive about 1,5 hours to our base for the following days: The farmhouse Minnivellir. This mountain was formed through an eruption under a glacier during the last ice age and though not very high (338m), it is a landmark towering over its surroundings. Our ride will take us around it through outlandish landscapes and surprisingly green oases. After the ride we will pack our gear (plus rain gear, just in case) into the trailer and then enjoy a coffee while watching the horses and waiting for dinner. After the dinner we embark our bus for a 1,5 hour drive to our base for the following days: The farmhouse Minnivellir. We reach Rangá river and have our lunch break at a historical sheep round-ups. After lunch we cross Rangá river and ride closer to Hekla until we reach Rjúpnavellir, where we leave our horses and drive back to Minnivellir for the night.

KIRKJUFELL ADVENTURE

Ride through northern Snæfellsnes, past dramatic waterfalls, mystical lava fields, and the iconic arrow-shaped mountain, Kirkjufell.

  • 4 nights / 5 riding days

  • €2,350 per person

  • Intermediate to experienced riders

We invite you to explore the northern part of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, an area replete with clandestine waterfalls, mystical legends, and quaint fishing villages. Our horse ride takes you on a path surrounded by vibrant volcanoes and through the eerie 4000-year-old Berserk lava field, which comprises lava rocks of varying shapes and is renowned for being the location of a part of the famous Eyrbyggja saga.

During our journey, we will ride around Mt Kirkjufell, considered by many as the most exquisite mountain in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and recognized as the "Arrowhead Mountain" in the Game of Thrones TV series. We will also visit the captivating Bjarnarhöfn area and explore the Shark Museum. The following days unveil the rugged beauty of the fjords and mountains of Iceland. Traverse the historical postal routes, ride alongside Grundarfjörður, and ascend the daunting and steep Tröllaháls mountain. Discover the mystical Berserk Lava Field, a testament to Icelandic folklore and history. Your path winds through enchanting landscapes, past abandoned farms, and into the heart of sagas. Our accommodation will be in the vicinity of the charming fishing town of Grundarfjörður, the only town worldwide with a dedicated plot for Iceland's hidden folk.

To extend your adventure, we highly recommend adding our 2 days Beach ride (with a €200 discount) to transform your experience into an unforgettable 6-day riding tour.

  • Day 1: On the traces of Games of Thrones

Today we arrive at Snæfellsnes around 12 pm. We have dinner and enjoy our free time until we get the horses saddled up for the first ride. We start on a trail just outside of Grundarfjörður, a small beautiful town situated in the north of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. We continue our ride towards Kirkjufell, the most distinct mountain in Iceland, considered one of the top 10 most beautiful mountains in the world, and yet most recognized as being “Arrowhead Mountain” on the TV series Game of Thrones. On the way we stop at the majestic waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss, take a selfie and enjoy the pristine nature around us. Then the ride leads us to the roots of Mt Kirkjufell where we make our way around this unique natural wonder, riding on the beach and grassy fields, we might even experience the famous Icelandic midnight sun.

The timing of the ride around Kirkjufell depends on the tide. In this case, we ride in the early afternoon.

Accommodation: Room at Midhraun Lava Resort

    Riding distance: 15 km.

Day 2: Fjordhopping: Grundarfjörður- Kolgrafafjörður – Bjarnarhöfn

We start our ride into the mountains passing Grundarfjörður, following the old postal route towards Kolgrafarfjörður bay. We bring the herd with us today and ride through green grasslands and cross rocky grounds. We rest the horses at the  foot of the mountain range Axarhamar, before we take the steep way up the mountain Tröllaháls. The ride leads into the beautiful Hraunsfjörður fjord where we ride past deserted farms and through the mystical Berserk lava, named after two unruly Berserks that were betrayed by an Icelandic farmer in the 10th century, and end our day at the farm Bjarnarhöfn.

Accommodation: Room at Midhraun Lava Resort

    Riding distance: 26 km.

Day 3. Bjarnarhöfn - Berserk Lava and the old Berserk Road.

This day is dedicated to the old Berserk Road, escorting us through the mythical Berserk Lava Field. Here, we pause to marvel at the peculiar lava formations. Weather permitting, and if the lake “Selvallavatn” is compliant, we may diverge to a hidden waterfall nearby. The journey concludes along the enchanting Berserkjargata lava trail, the final resting place of the legendary Berserks, where we immerse ourselves in the sagas while riding with the herd. Back at Bjarnarhöfn, the day offers a cultural twist with a visit to the shark museum to delve into the world of the Greenland shark and perhaps daring to sample “hákarl,” the notorious fermented shark.

Accommodation: Room at Midhraun Lava Resort

    Riding distance 22 km.

Day 4. In the steps of the giantess: Ride over the Snæfellsnes mountains following Kerlingarskarð.

Today's route leads us from Bjarnarhöfn again to the old Berserkjargata. We pass craters and abandoned cottages and ride on soft paths up to Lake Selvallavatn, with a spectacular view of the colorful 4000-year-old Berserk lava field and variably shaped landscape around. We continue with our journey, making our way towards the mountain pass of Kerlingarskarð, once a well-trodden postal route. This pass takes its name from a rock formation known as "kerling," which, according to local legend, is a giantess turned to stone. The story says that this giantess was heading home with fish from the lake when the morning sun caught her, transforming her and her string of trout into a permanent stone fixture. This landmark, which has long been passed over by cars, now offers a path less traveled, allowing our horses to roam freely. We spend most of our day riding through the mountain pass and will end on the south side of Snæfellsnes.

Accommodation: Room at Midhraun Lava Resort
    Riding distance: 35 km.
