Information Concerning all Rides in catalonia

  • The Andalusian horse is spirited but very gentle and sensible. Our horses have a good life: they live in a natural herd setting that suits their character. They are selected for their appropriate temperament and a lot of time is spent on training them, they are reliable and sure-footed. Each of them has a unique personality, but they have one thing in common: they are high performance athletes. A choice of about 30 lovely and reliable Andalusian and Spanish horses is waiting for you, to make your riding holiday a unique experience!

Historically, the name ‘Andalusian’ dates back to the Middle Ages when the Muslim part of the Pyrenees peninsula, where horse breeding flourished, was called Al-Andalus. The breed is obviously not limited to today's region of Andalusia. However, the fact that important centres of Spanish horse breeding are located in the Southern Spanish region of Andalusia is misleading.

The breeding of the PRE (Pura Raza Española) is extremely strict and the studbook has been managed for a long time by the Spanish Ministry of Defense. Only stallions and mares that are registered here and have completed and passed a licensing are approved for breeding. All other Spanish horses that cannot be qualified as PRE or horses of other pure Spanish bloodlines are called "Andalusians".

  • ACOMMODATION:

Some guest houses have a swimming pool and gardens with cosy terraces.

    FOOD:

Our attentive hosts will get you to experience the regional food culture: fish, game, vegetable and fruits…and fine wines.

During lunch breaks, you will mostly have delightful saddle-bag picnics or buffet-style picnics. Some meals are taken in typical Catalan restaurants, you will have a choice of various Spanish dishes to choose from the day menu.

We hire a catering for special dietary needs: whether you prefer vegan, gluten-free, or lactose-free options, please inform us of your specific requirements when booking.

  • Individual travel insurance is not included in the tour price. We encourage all guests to contact their travel insurance before their trip.

Check out our blog for tips on choosing the right insurance for your riding holiday.

    • Riding helmets: we have only a limited supply of basic helmets so we advise that you bring your own.

    • Riding Footwear: bring a pair of comfortable boots with a good grip. Boots which you can use for riding but are also excellent if the terrain dictates that you walk beside your horse for a while. We recommend an ankle boot with half-leg chaps, comfortable for both riding and walking.

    • Riding Trousers: two pairs of riding trousers or jodhpurs are usually enough. Together with half-leg chaps will ensure you are comfortable for long hours in the saddle.

    • Riding Gloves: they protect the hands from blisters - remember that you may be sitting longer than usual in the saddle and contrary to usual habits you may prefer to use a pair.

    • Other extras:

      • Personal care products (towels are usually provided in the accommodation).

      • Each rider gets a saddle bag, in which you can pack personal things for the rides.

      • A hip/ abdominal bag has proven itself useful for quick access to your phone or camera (don’t forget additional batteries or a charger)

      • A headlamp could be useful, but is not essential.

      • Plastic bags can protect your personal belongings from water damage caused by rain or river crossings.

      • Sun protection is especially important! Take a small bottle of sunscreen on the rides so that you can freshen up the protection at any time.

      • Insects repellent is also recommended.

    • Water bottle: 1 liter for daily filling and transport

    • Medical Kit: small medical kit with basic remedies such as antacids, painkillers, anti-inflammatories, antihistamines, anti-diarrhoea such as Imodium. If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses you might want to take some spares.

    • Hot weather:

      • Long sleeved shirts to protect against the sun

      • Hats or caps for sun protection at the picnic

      • Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip salve

      • Flip-flops, swimming suit, shorts

      • Fleece and lightweight jacket for the night

HORIZON TRAIL

Seek the best Costa Brava coastal views

  • 6 nights / 5 days riding

  • From €2290 per person

  • Intermediate riders

The Horizon Trail is a scenic riding adventure along the Costa Brava, designed for riders who prefer relaxed riding days and beautiful landscapes. Following carefully chosen trails, you will reach Cap de Creus, the easternmost point of Spain, where the Pyrenees meet the sea in dramatic fashion. Highlights include stunning coastal views, an overnight stay and visit at the oldest Andalusian horse PRE stud in Catalonia, and visits to charming fishing villages such as Cadaqués and Port de la Selva. This trail offers an enjoyable experience for confident and ambitious riders.

  • The whole distance covered is about 90-110km. Daily riding time between 3-5 hours a day, one day 2 hours.

    Day 1:

Arrival in Barcelona or Girona and transfer to our first accommodation, a typical Catalan stone house. The quiet location in the beautiful Catalonian countryside invites to relax. At dinner, we meet our new "riding friends" and our guide.

Day 2: The lovely hinterland of the Wild Coast

We depart from the stables in the morning. Over fields and through peacefulness surroundings we discover hidden natural stone villages. We arrive at an old oil mill where a hearty meal has already been prepared for us.

With every bite of the delicious tapas and every sip of the fine oils, we immerse ourselves deeper into the flavours of this unique region.

After a rest, we ride to our accommodation in the afternoon. After caring for our faithful horses, we round off the day with another tasty dinner.

Day 3: P.R.E. Andalusian Stud Farm

This morning the River Fluvià leads us towards the sea. At some points we cross the river and pass through beautiful Catalan villages with resounding hoof clatter. Under old cork trees our trail assistant has already laid the table for lunch! What a magnificent place to enjoy the delights!

After lunch we get back on trail. In the afternoon, surrounded by rice fields, we arrive at our impressive home for the night, the oldest P.R.E. Stud of Catalonia (P.R.E. = Pure Spanish Breed). At the stud, the friendly owner proudly presents his horses and we learn many interesting facts about the history of the P.R.E. horse. Maybe you will find your dream horse here?

Day 4: The Plains of the Empordà

We leave the Stud Farm through the rice fields and ride across the plain of Empordà to Castelló de Empúries with its mighty cathedral. We cross the northern marsh area of the Aiguamolls with its diverse birdlife. The Mediterranean Pyrenees frame the vast plain like an amphitheatre. Near Roses, a luxurious house with a swimming pool and spa offers us a pleasant place to stay.

    Day 5: Cap de Creus

Like mountain goats, our "Andalusians" climb into the mountainous Cap de Creus. High up on the pass we will be rewarded with breath-taking panoramic views: the Gulf of Roses stretches out to the south, while the Golf del Lleó lies to the north. As we ride along, herbs and flowers line the path, and occasional cork oak

groves add a touch of Mediterranean charm. We then descend into a peaceful valley framed by rolling hills.

Soon, we pass through a picturesque village, its winding alleys and traditional houses transporting us back in time. Here, a delicious lunch awaits at a popular restaurant known for its warm hospitality.

After this refreshing break, we continue through the stunning landscapes of the natural park, eventually arriving at the bustling fishing village of Port de la Selva. Our accommodation for the night is an elegant hotel. The afternoon is free for us to explore — whether relaxing on the beach or wandering through the village’s charming streets.

Day 6: The magical land of the Wild Coast

An old trade route winds through rocky terrain in the Natural Park of Cap de Creus. This is where the last foothills of the Pyrenees sink into the electric-blue sea. The vivid colours of the sky and sea, the eroded rock formations and the bright bays with their deep canyons immerse us in an unreal coastal landscape. In a beautiful bay we have a picnic and go for a swim. We spend our last night at Cadaqués, a jewel of the Costa Brava. The whitewashed fishing village, with its old, winding streets is one of the most beautiful village on the Wild Coast. The best "Paella" in the village completes our last evening of this eventful journey.

    Day 7: Hasta la vista!

Transfer to Barcelona or Girona, or extension to another trail.

The Horizon Trail is the ideal program for trail riders who do not want to miss the spectacular scenery of the Costa Brava, but with relaxed riding days. The balanced and quite pleasant riding days also offer ideal conditions for less experienced riders. The varied trail connects the lovely countryside of the Catalonian hinterland with the Wild Coast.

The modest pace and the slightly shorter riding days do not require an above average physical condition.

MEDITERRANEAN TRAIL

Discover Catalonia riding from the mountain to the beach

  • 6 nights / 5 days riding

  • From €1990 per person

  • Intermediate to advanced, fit riders

The Mediterranean Trail is a varied riding journey through north-eastern Spain, crossing green hills, mountain landscapes, and the Mediterranean coast. Riding days range from 4 to 7 hours, including two days along the beach. The trail also features medieval villages and accommodation in comfortable rustic stone houses, family-run farms, and hotels.

  • The whole distance covered is about 130-160km. Every day, you will spend 4-7 hours in the saddle.

    Day 1:

Arrival in Spain (Barcelona or Girona) and transfer to our first accommodation, a gorgeous country house with its unique character. The well-kept garden is a paradise to relax in. What a beautiful place to begin your holiday in Spain!

    Day 2: Catalonia

We leave the riding centre heading south, riding through dense holm oak forests, passing peaceful farming villages, and following a lonely trail through the hilly landscape of the Empordà. The shady forest paths of the Mediterranean pine forest are perfect for long canter/gallops. At a brisk pace, we reach a pretty village at the foot of the Gavarra mountains.

We are served a Catalan picnic in a charming country house. In the afternoon, we enjoy some time off in the beautiful garden and look forward to a delicious dinner.

Day 3: Lonely forests and medieval villages

Today we are delighted by the unspoilt landscape of Catalonia with shades of yellow, brown and green. Centuries-old villages spread as far as we can see! We listen to the clatter of hooves on the old cobblestones as we ride through the narrow winding streets of the authentic natural stone villages. On a hidden hill with a spectacular view over the Empordà plain, we reinvigorate ourselves with a delicious picnic lunch. After a rest, we approach the most beautiful town on the Costa Brava- Peratallada. An old town wall surrounds the lovingly interlocking stone houses. On the patterned cobblestones of the narrow streets, we can still appreciate the scratches of the horse-drawn carriages of days gone by. In this ambience, the friendly landlady introduce us to her cosy accommodation. A stroll through the village in the balmy evening atmosphere brings the day to a peaceful close.

Day 4: Spain, sun, beach, and the sea <*>

Right at the start of the riding day, we pass another "pearl" of the Catalonian coast - Palau Sator. The ride then takes us through rice fields. In the shade of the Mediterranean pine forests, soft sandy paths invite us to trot and canter before we stop for lunch. In the afternoon we continue to our accommodation for tonight, a family run little guesthouse near to the Montgri massif.

Day 5: Vamos a la playa! Discover the Mediterranean Sea! <*>

Another varied day begins. We immerse ourselves in the tranquillity of the continental sand dunes. We continue with the steep ascent to the rugged Montgrí massif and are rewarded! A fantastic view over the endless expanse of the Mediterranean awaits us! Seabirds glide in the currents over the coast. We have a delicious picnic surrounded by the scent of lavender, rosemary and thyme.

During a long canter, we cross the high plateau of the coastal mountain range and dive under the canopy of Mediterranean pines, pleasantly shaded, towards the sea. Kilometres of sandy beach lie before us. The water splashes, the sand flies, we ride off into the sunset. The horses play with the waves and we try to stay dry.

In the centre of the bay, the river Fluvía flows into the sea. It leads us to a cosy country house close to the beach. We round off the ride with a drink on the terrace. Those who want to, can refresh themselves in the pool before dinner.

    Day 6: „El Fluvià“ – River Trail

The river Fluvia winds itself through the countryside. We follow it inland and ride through a wild meadow landscape. On a hill, we enjoy a tasty picnic in the sunshine. Then it is time for a siesta!

In the afternoon, the trail continues along the river for a while before leading us back to our riding centre through forests, meadows and pretty natural stone villages. We round off the trip with a cool drink and look forward to a farewell dinner together.

Day 7: Hasta la vista, Catalonia!

After breakfast, transfer to Barcelona or Girona, or extension to another trail.

The Mediterranean Trail is ridden at all gaits, so it is recommended that you know how to connect with your four-legged partner. It is also perfect for experienced riders who usually just train in the arena and would be interested to experience trail rides. Our sure-footed horses provide the necessary security in this varied terrain.
